Team-building games: The Quiz

Team-Building Activities – The Quiz

It often comes up as an idea to organize team-building programs or games in-house. Not only does this save money, but it also gives us a chance to involve colleagues and create something together. Once you’ve decided you don’t want an external provider for the event, planning can begin! However, the question of ‘what should we actually do?’ often arises. One of the most popular and relatively easy-to-implement team-building games is the quiz. With this activity, colleagues can comfortably sit with a drink, participate at their own desired level, have opportunities to connect and chat, and the competitive setting also motivates participation. Nowadays, you can find plenty of ready-made question lists on the internet, but if you write your own, you have better control over topics, difficulty, and how well the quiz fits your team’s culture.

Tips for organizing a quiz night:

  • Decide on the format! The quickest option is to use an online platform, with each team playing on their phones—good choices include Kahoot, Canva, or Menti. A more time-consuming but visually engaging option is to create your own PowerPoint with the questions, possible answers, images, and effects; in this case, teams can write answers on paper.
  • Set the duration! A well-designed program can run for 1–3 hours; we recommend 2–2.5 hours, which is enough for plenty of questions, breaks, marking answers, and announcing results. For a 2-hour quiz, prepare around 50 questions and two 10-minute breaks.
  • Choose question types! The more variety, the more exciting your program will be. We suggest choosing about 6 types, with 5–10 questions each. Possible types include:
  • Multiple choice (ABCD): Choose the correct answer out of 4!

  • True or false: Is the statement true or false?

  • Open questions: Answer in 1–2 words!

  • Anagrams: Letters are mixed—form a meaningful word or sentence!

  • Guessing: Guess who or what is being described! The fewer clues you need, the more points you score!

  • Sound recognition: Identify the sound—who is presenting what?

  • Picture recognition: What’s in the picture?

  • Connection round: Answer the questions and tell what connects the answers!

  • Matching: Which statement pairs with which?

  • Accusation: Which team performed worse than yours in this round? Write their names!
  • Choose question categories! The more varied the topics, the more diverse your team-building event will be. Try to find the same number of questions for each, at a similar difficulty level. Consider participants’ age, gender, occupation, hobbies, etc. Possible topics include:
  • Pop culture, news, and TV; Nature; Movies and series; Geography; Gastronomy and lifestyle; Literature; Games; Math, logic, and economics; Memes; Daily life; Arts and theater; Language; Politics and public life; Sports; Social sciences; Technology and transportation; Natural sciences and the human body; History; Religion and mythology; Music; Company-specific questions. After writing the questions, verify the answers, and prepare some fun facts and images related to the topics.
  • You’ll need a quizmaster to read the questions and introduce the rules for each round.
  • After all questions are done and a break, have teams swap answer sheets and correct them together.
  • In the case of a tie, it’s a good idea to have a tiebreaker: ask a question that requires a numerical answer, and the team closest to the correct answer wins. Of course, the quickest solution is to outsource the quiz; this way, you’ll get tried-and-tested questions and a qualified quizmaster. If you need personalized quizzes, don’t hesitate to contact us!
